Jones restaurant (located at 620 Jones Street in San Francisco) is a new restaurant which opened a few months back in October 2010 with head chef, Ola Fendert. A trendy loft-like space, with sleek lines, dark lighting and an outdoor patio (which they refer to as a roof deck) set the ambiance.
The food was delicious. Enjoyed everything we had except for the soup – which was under seasoned. Two bars, great inventive cocktail list, and cool co-ed bathrooms (you know I always judge a place by its bathroom). We went for dinner on Friday night at 7:30pm and they were still having happy hour – $5 apps – a steal!
Here’s what we had:
- The Breakfast Martini – I don’t usually order mixed drinks, but the cocktail list looked so appetizing that I just had to try one. Although it wasn’t breakfast, the Breakfast Martini was something I could have slurped down. It was dangerously easy drinking. A must order.
- Chicken & Waffle - I was hesitant to try this southern dish, but it was tasty. A tiny tad bit dry, but it was good. You could taste the maple syrup, and maybe because I am a sucker for maple syrup, I wanted a side ramekin of it to dip each bite in. I gave this a thumbs up.
- Beet salad – well, I make a homemade beet salad that is to die for, but I enjoyed this nonetheless. Wanted a bit more goat cheese. The dressing was light and delicious and it brought out the sweet beet flavor. Yummy! If you like beets, you’ll like this.
- Truffle fries – they should call these “crack” fries because they are addictive. I could have eaten the whole plate, but I had to share…bummer!
- Pulled Pork Slider – This was probably my favorite. I seriously could have eaten 3 of these. The apple cole slaw was just the right level of acid mixed in with the sweet savory BBQ sauce. Seriously, so good. A must order.
- Celery Root Soup – It was okay, but it wasn’t great. It was also a huge portion of soup. I’m not sure you can make great celery root soup anyway so not clear if the flaw is with the chef or the root vegetable here. Probably the root vegetable since everything else I had was delicious.
- Brioche Bread Pudding – Anyone who reads this blog knows I get dessert every time because life is short and you should always save room for dessert. And even though I didn’t have a ton of room left, I squeezed in the brioche bread pudding. Light and airy topped with a dollop of whipped cream and raspberries resting on what seemed like vanilla creme anglaise. It was scrumptious. It was well balanced and I am glad I saved room for it.
What I didn’t like:
- The lighting – a little too dark
- The $35 corkage fee – for a restaurant with a limited wine list (6 bottles), I thought this was a tad high. $20-$25 would have been acceptable.
- The name of the restaurant made it hard to find on the web because there used to be another restaurant in the Marina district of the same name that closed down only a few years ago. This restaurant’s website is http://www.620-jones.com
All in all, it was an incredible value for the quality of food. I would have expected to pay in the $200 range and it was under $100 (and that included the ridiculous corkage fee of $35). I think it’s a must try if you are in San Francisco. You will not be disappointed.
